The World Of Graffiti

Graffiti has been long taken as a form of vandalism. However, this is not at all true because graffiti is one form of art. Graffiti are drawings or words inscribed on wall. The word “graffiti” comes from the Greek word graphein, which means to write. These writing are commonly found in private and public properties. They were written there without permission making this form of art hated by many.

The Beginning of Graffiti

Looking back, graffiti became popular in the year 1960 when Julio 204 began writing his name around the city of New York. Another individual with the tag Taki183 soon followed it. Their writings are commonly found in subway walls, which are now called the New York graffiti style. Although this style of writing is now popularly known, the start of graffiti itself is said to originate from Philadelphia. Cornbread and Top Cat are said to be the ones that started graffiti. Soon after the emergence of the New York graffiti style, writings of Top Cat started appearing in New York. The graffiti style of Top Cat is now well known as the Broadway style. This is due to the long slender letters used in this kind of style. In the 1970s, other graffiti writers started appearing in the city and have increased since then.

Current View on Graffiti

As of today, graffiti writings are commonly seen in the streets of most of the developed cities throughout the world. Most of the gangster members take pleasure in marking their territories giving graffiti another bad image. Although gangster members and graffiti writers are different from each other, there are similarities in them. Both seek recognition in their friends, they use aliases, take part in illegal activities (writing on walls without permission) and have a notion that what they are doing is noble. This blurs the line between graffiti writers and gangsters. Now people think that gangster members marking their territory do all the written graffiti on the street not taking it into consideration that it may be an artist showing the world their art.

Current Graffiti Styles

Currently many graffiti styles exist. Over the years of practice, each of the graffiti writers developed their own way much the same as painters develop their technique. There are many more graffiti styles existing today and enumerating them all would take some time. Some of the popularly known modern graffiti styles are Chinese graff, Wiggles Bboy, Shadow, Flava, Puzzle, Softy Letter, 3D, and Base Color. Some of the graffiti styles are a combination of these popular styles.

The color used in the graffiti also differentiates it from the rest. In most cases, a wide array of colors is used in order to give a more noticeable look. In addition, more colors only means more design that you can work on.

If you are planning to make graffiti a hobby, a tip is start simple then continually practice your skills until you can already make an art that speaks for itself.
